The history of Cairns Esplanade Festival of Sport dates back to 1981 with the establishment of the Coral Coast Triathlon, Australia’s first official triathlon. In it’s 27 year history, the Festival (previously named ‘Sportsfest’) has its share of ups and downs until the running of the Festival was taken over by local community groups and organisations. It is now on the national calendar as a major sporting event.
Approximately 700 athletes competed at last year’s Festival of Sport, with the vast majority of them originating from Far North Queensland; even though a few competitors came from out of state and overseas.
2008 also saw the introduction of the Community Sports Expo, with over twenty local sporting and interest groups coming together in Fogarty Park to promote their clubs and demonstrate their sports and activities.
Ancillary events accompany the Cairns Esplanade Festival of Sport in order to provide entertainment for spectators and competitors alike. Year by year this event has continued to grow in spectator numbers and support from the community. Discover more...
